Returning Residents

Frequently Asked Questions by Trinidadians & Tobagonians living abroad who are planning to return home to take up residence.

Q.

My brother has been living abroad for several years, and he wants to return home with all his personal and household effects. Does he have to pay duties on his household effects?

A.

No. These items will be allowed in free of duty if they have been in his use and possession for at least one (1) year and are not for sale or exchange. They can be imported within six (6) months of his arrival in Trinidad/Tobago. It should be noted however, that a written declaration to the effect has to be made to the Customs by the importer. This would necessitate that the importer should be in Trinidad/Tobago at the time the goods are being cleared from Customs. Evidence of residence abroad and date of arrival in Trinidad/Tobago must be provided.

Q.

What if he has other household items, which are new or have not been in his use and possession for the stipulated time?

A.

Then, he will be required to pay a "Special Tax" of ten per cent (10%) on the landed value of the goods.

Q.

What if he wants to bring a motor-vehicle home with him?

A.

To bring a motor-vehicle home, see Importation of a Motor-Vehicle for details.
